This doesn’t necessarily mean looking for subtle physical tells such as scratching your nose or playing nervously with your chips but instead you want to pay attention to their betting patterns. For example if one player constantly bets and then folds they are probably playing pretty weak hands so you might want to call their bets more often.
It is also a good idea to know the poker hand rankings so that you can quickly figure out what your odds are of winning a given hand. For instance a full house beats a flush, three of a kind beats two pair and so on. It is also helpful to memorize poker odds charts so that you can remember the probabilities of a given hand.
During the course of a hand there will be three betting rounds. The first is when the flop is revealed, followed by the turn and finally the river. During each round a player can increase their bet by matching or raising the last bet made.
It is generally considered bad etiquette to take your cards off the table and hide them in your lap during a hand. This can lead to the other players putting more money into the pot than they need to and it could give them an unfair advantage over you. It is also a good idea to leave your cards on the table with a chip on them so that they can be seen by the other players. This will help them to see if you are still in the hand and it will also ensure that other players don’t try to cheat by hiding their cards under your chips.
